My dogs tail has gone reli small and hair looks reli thin.?

Take the dog to the vet and have his thyroid checked.

Also, unneutered dogs of some northern breeds get what we call "stud tail" which is a shortening of the tail as well as loss of fur.

It sounds like your dog is loosing his hair. Have you checked with your vet? It could only be an allergy, but your vet can verify this.

What kind of dog food do you feed your dog? The most common cause of allergies in our pets is corn, wheat and soy. Check the ingredients on your kibble. I use a holistic dog food called Blue Buffalo. They have vitamin pellets that are cold formed and added to the kibble after the kibble is baked to preserve the potency of the nutrients, thus more is absorbed by the dog!

The tail should not change size, but if it has lost all/most of its hair could be two things I would look for, right off the bat:

Go to vet.

1. fleas

2. rat tail, which is often an indication of hypothyroidism. Determining this takes a blood test (hopefully a 6-panel test!). If doggie is found hypothyroid, it is a course of a morning and evening pill, thyroxine or soloxine for example, for the animal's remaining life. Hypothyroidism can cause problems with internal organs, skin and hair loss. Also, often, dogs will get an associated fungal and/or bacterial ear infection with it, as well. Sometimes, they will also get skin infections in addition.

You need to go to the vet. The medication for hypothyroidism is not pricey.
