How does one get their hair "thinned"?

I know that they can do that at the hair place but HOW do they thin hair? Do they cut the bottom hairs really short or what do they do?

Their are different technics, some stylist use razors, others do layered squares, and then some people do this in the form of a trim, but you cut vertically.

If you were planning on thinning your hair yourself, go to your local beauty supply store (ie. Sallys) and pickup some thinning shears. They are hair scissors that have horizontal slits across each blade. I have a pair and it works perfectly.

layering is the best technique where the top layers are cut shorter through out the hair you can by thinning scissors which when you cut into the hair takes does the same thing it takes the weight out and generally thins the hair

The razor is used for 'razoring' hair, not thinning. Thinning is done with special scissors that look like a cross between cutting shears and a comb. It cuts some of the hair and not the rest. It doesnt make hair look dead. And they do it all the hair except the top layer. You really have to feel around to realize its done and unless some is doing your hair they would never know. Well except that your hair is thinned out.
