Buy a powder lightener, such Clairol BW2, available at beauty supply stores such as Sally Beauty Supply. Mix equal parts powder lightener with 20 VOLUME developer (for blended in blonde streaks); if you want really light blonde streaks, use 30 VOLUME developer. Pull hairs through a plastic highlighting cap (the one with the little holes in it). Remember to mostly, if not entirely, pull hairs only from the top of your head (the crown). Apply highlighting mixture to the hairs that were pulled out, and leave on until you see the desired lightness (30-60 minutes). Wash everything off, and you're done.

If later you don't want the blonde streaks as light, or you want them warmer, you can apply a toner. You can apply the toner to all of your hair, which will make it easy for you; the deeper red color will not be affected because it is darker, and you will ask the sales person to recommend a pale toner for you in the shade that you request. I have red hair and I have alot of trouble getting my hair to take on blond. I tried the higlighting kits before and didnt get a "noticeable" highlight. I now use a gel called Lightening Gel and it is sorta like Sun In but you dont have to heat it or expose it to sun for it to work. I apply it all over but my 12 yr old girl has made chunky highlights in her hair with it.

If you go to a salon go to one that can do foil wraps I hear they take better.

I jsut watched on the "Daily 10" on the "E", and they were talking about how to get your hair ligtened naturally. All you do is get lemon juice and mix it in with your shampoo, and wash it for one week. But since you want highlights, just dip dip strands of your hair in the lemon/shampoo and wash just what you want.
